(Cherry Hill, NJ) – Camden County in partnership with the NJ Forest Fire Service will be setting a prescribed burn in Berlin Park located in Berlin Borough between March 4th and March 15th. There will be a 24-hour notice of the beginning of the burn because it is weather dependent.
“Prescribed burns are an important tool in keeping our lands ecologically healthy and minimizing the risk of forest fires,” said Commissioner Jeffrey Nash, liaison to the Camden County Parks Department. “We will be updating residents through each step of this process to ensure everyone is on the same page.”
Once the burn begins it will last one full day, however there will be smoke, a burning smell and small burning pockets for several days.
Other benefits of prescribed burns include:
- Lowers the risk of more dangerous fires
- Increases water availability through plant removal
- Increases plant diversity
- Helps control invasive species
- Reduces tree competition
- Improves wildlife habitat
