(Lindenwold, NJ) – A $1.2 million road project that will improve several aspects of Route 561 at White Horse Road is set to break ground this fall in Voorhees Township. The project is a joint venture between Camden County and Voorhees Township and will be an impactful enhancement for the community.
The project’s work includes widening Route 561 at White Horse Road in the westbound direction, which will allow for an additional through lane for westbound traffic and a dedicated lane for traffic turning left onto White Horse Road northbound from the eastbound direction. Additionally, a new traffic signal will be installed, the roadway will be resurfaced and restriped and a sidewalk will be constructed along the eastbound side of Route 561.
“This individual intersection has been overburdened with antiquated turning lanes for decades and as Camden County continues to grow and more vehicles traverse the area these enhancements are going to make it much easier and most importantly safer to make a left on to White Horse Road from Rt. 561,” said Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “Now and moving forward we will be able to relieve the horrific congestion at that site and make the necessary upgrades to improve travel in this area of the county for generations to come.”
The goal of the widening is to hopefully reduce the significant number of crashes that occur due to vehicles being unable to safely shift over into the single through lane as they approach the intersection.
“The municipality funded the project design effort, completed necessary easement acquisition from the Eagle Plaza shopping center and coordinated utility pole relocations needed in the area of the proposed widening,” Dyer continued. “The work should take around four to six months to complete, with the majority of the work scheduled to occur overnight to avoid any major disruptions to this heavily traveled area.”
The Camden County Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining over 1,200 miles of county roadway and 50 bridges. They are dedicated to making our area safer for motorists and pedestrians through county highway construction projects and road maintenance, including pothole repairs, street sweeping, grass cutting and storm drainage upkeep. The Public Works Department is located in Lindenwold where personnel are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to serve the residents of Camden County.
