Bird Flu

The United States had its second case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A Virus (H5N1) more commonly known as the bird flu in California in December. H5N1 is a highly contagious and often deadly respiratory disease that affects poultry, wildlife, and sometimes humans. H5N1 is primarily spread through direct contact with infected animals, their droppings, or contaminated environments such as food or drinks.

Common Symptoms Include:
• Fever or feeling feverish.
• Sore Throat
• Cough
• Fatigue (feeling tired)
• Shortness of breath
• Eye Redness or irritation

To prevent the spread of H5N1, you can:
• Wash your hands thoroughly after handling birds or uncooked poultry products.
• Cook poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165°F.
• Avoid raw dairy products.
• Avoid poultry farms and live bird markets.
• Avoid contact with wild or domesticated birds.
