(Gloucester Township) – The Camden County Freeholder Board’s Office of Mental Health and Addiction and the Camden County Partnership for Suicide Prevention will host a free virtual screening of the documentary “The S Word” on December 1 at 6 p.m. The 2017 film tackles one of the most unfathomable and cloistered issues of our time.
“We hope that this film will start a conversation and raise awareness about suicide prevention and the resources that are available,” said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Office of Mental Health and Addiction. “All of our lives have been touched by suicide in some way and we need to talk openly about it without judgement, shame, or discrimination.”
The film follows a suicide attempt survivor on a mission to find fellow survivors and document their stories of courage, insight, and humor. Along the way, she discovers a rising national movement transforming personal struggles into action. The film has been described as a powerful feature documentary that puts a human face to a topic that has long been stigmatized and buried with the lives it has claimed.
The screening will help educate students, school staff, families, and community members on this important topic. Counselors will be on hand throughout the film to offer support to and guidance. This film is recommended for ages 15 and older.
