Freeholder Edward McDonnell was first elected to the Camden County Board of Freeholders in 1995. Professionally, he is the Vice President of Economic Development and Executive Dean of the Rohrer Center at Camden County College, responsible for all economic development program offerings, including customized training for business and industry. Freeholder McDonnell began his career in public education as a high school teacher of Latin, history, English, Journalism and Public Speaking. Later, he became a middle school counselor and eventually an elementary school principal in the Collingswood Public School system. Prior to his current position, Ed served as Camden County College's Executive Dean of Economic Development, Dean of Enrollment Management, and Dean of Community Education. He has also served as an adjunct professor of English since 1974. Ed is the Chairperson of the Collegiate Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development in Philadelphia, and Vice-chair of the New Jersey Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development, representing eighteen community colleges across the state. Freeholder McDonnell holds a Doctorate in Educational Administration from Nova Southeastern University, and has earned two Master of Arts degrees, one in English and another in Student Personnel Services from Glassboro State College, where he also received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. As a Freeholder, Ed McDonnell oversees the Department of Finance which includes the Division of Budget, Division of Human Resources, Division of Purchasing and the Division of Insurance. He also oversees the Superintendent of Elections and the Board of Elections. He is also liaison to the Battleship USS New Jersey. In addition to his educational and governmental duties, Ed McDonnell devotes much of his time working with disabled citizens. For 20 years he has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of LARC School, a school for disabled children and young adults. He has served as a member of the Regional Family Support Planning Council of the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities, and as a member of the South Jersey Advisory Board for the Epilepsy Foundation of America. He is the published author of many articles in the field of public education, and, along with his late brother, Thomas McDonnell, is the co-author of A Parents' Guide to Saving Our Children, a publication created to help parents minimize the impact of drug and alcohol experimentation by their children. 175,000 copies of the GUIDE were published by Rutgers University and the South Jersey Newspapers Company, and have been distributed to parents throughout Camden, Gloucester, Cumberland and Salem counties. Township and is the proud father of two daughters; Mandy, who is a student
at LARC, and Katie, who is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame
and Rutgers Law School.
