Caring for Aging Loved Ones Conference

Residents walked away with several resources to help them as caregivers

An abundance of resources was available for caregivers at the Caring for Aging Loved Ones Conference Sept. 15, which drew a crowd of approximately 100 people and filled the space at the Holiday Inn in Runnemede to capacity.

There was a team of experts with answers on providing home and respite care, housing options, health insurance counseling and a broad spectrum of legal issues. Attendees could also speak directly with experts from Social Security, Senior and Disabled Citizen Services, Surrogate’s Court, Medicaid, Senior Citizens United Community Services (SCUCS) and an elder law attorney.

“It’s no surprise to me to hear what a success the Caring for Aging Loved Ones Conference was because this is an issue that affects many people in Camden County of all backgrounds,” said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Department of Health & Human Services. “I’m glad so many people came out to take advantage of all the wonderful resources available here in Camden County, both through our Division of Senior and Disabled Services and other agencies. They are the people with the answers. By reaching out and taking advantage of all that’s available, our residents can find that balance they need between taking care of others and caring for themselves.”

Freeholder Rodriguez and event organizers, including Joy Merulla, director of the Division of Senior & Disabled Services, and Patrick Shuttleworth, director of the Department of Health & Human Services, saw that the panel of speakers was able to help many people and feedback was very positive. Though the event was scheduled to end at 8:30 p.m., experts stayed until 9 p.m. to discuss participants’ concerns.

The free conference, now in its eighth year, was held by the Freeholder Board in conjunction with the Camden County Division of Senior & Disabled Services.
