For Immediate Release: May 8, 2008
Contacts: KEN SHUTTLEWORTH
The Camden County Freeholders on May 14 will honor 196 high school
seniors as the Best of Class 2008. These exceptional students share
a pride in personal achievement and satisfaction in contributing
to their school and community.
“This program honors seniors from 33 high
schools in the county who are typically better-than-average students,
but may not appear at the top of their class in academics or athletics,”
said Freeholder Jeffrey L. Nash who helped create the Best of Class
program in 1999, along with County Clerk James Beach.
The
freeholders will also honor the families of these deserving students
during the annual dinner, which this year takes place at Lucien’s
Manor. The students receiving Best of Class recognition were nominated
in the following categories: leadership,
community service, most improved, most courageous, performing arts and best overall
student.
“The students are ‘unsung heroes’
chosen by their schools for taking pride in academic achievement
and striving to do their best to improve themselves while helping
others in the process,” said Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli
Jr.
Typical of the honorees is Katie Short, 19, of Pine
Hill, a student at Overbrook High School. “She is a terrific
kid and the first one to pitch in when a team effort is needed,”
said teacher Karen Parker, who nominated Katie because of her dedication
to hard work and community service.
Ms. Parker said Katie is president of the Leo Club,
sponsored by the Lions Clubs, where she helped organize a project
to send packages with chewing gum, popcorn and other items intended
to be reminders of home for American soldiers fighting in Iraq.
Ms. Parker said Katie aspires to be a special education
teacher after completing her undergraduate and graduate studies
in college.
