The Camden County Freeholder Board, on the recommendations of the Camden County Open Space Advisory Committee, approved the acquisition of Atco Lake and land adjacent to New Brooklyn Park.

“Over 12,000 acres of open space and farmland have been preserved through the Camden County Open Space Preservation Trust Fund to date,” explained Freeholder Jeffrey L. Nash, liaison to the Camden County Open Space Advisory Committee. “These two properties will go to further our commitment to save Camden County’s remaining open space for future generations.”

The Atco Lake acquisition, in Waterford and Winslow Townships, consists of over 77 acres. At a total cost of $240,000, this property expands the county’s greenway system, a corridor of publicly owned open space that spans the county.

The other property, known as the Kercland Property, is located in Winslow Township, adjacent to the county’s New Brooklyn Park. This 34 acre parcel, also within the county’s greenway, closes a gap between New Brooklyn Park and nearby county-owned lands. This property was acquired at a cost of $41,058.

In November of 1998, residents of Camden County overwhelmingly approved passage of The Camden County Open Space, Recreation, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund Referendum. The trust fund goes to ensure that our children, and their children, will have the benefit of enjoying the remaining open space that exists in Camden County for years to come. The County is committed to preserving parks, natural areas, historic sites, and farmland, not only for their scenic value, but for their use and enjoyment, and for purposes of cultural and ecological enrichment.

The Camden County Open Space Preservation Trust Fund Advisory Committee was appointed by the Camden County Board of Freeholders for purposes of providing guidance regarding implementation of the Trust Fund and the principles of Open Space preservation that it represents.
