“All Around the World With 4-H” theme at
This
year’s theme, “All Around the World With 4-H,” opened on Friday, Feb. 29 with “The
Global Simulation Workshop,” which is described as “an innovative three-hour
program that builds valuable leadership and teamwork skills. The simulation
lets students become world leaders responsible for running the world for 30
years. It gives students the ‘big picture’ view of the world and takes into
account history, economics, geography, political science, ethics, social
studies, technology and culture. Each team faced a unique set of challenges
involving all of these factors and then had to determine which problems to
address and how to develop sustainable solutions to these problems.
A
global theme was maintained throughout the conference with other workshops
showcasing various cultures through dance, music and customs, including rhythm
of the Caribbean; Ukrainian eggs; international clothes search to learn about
where our clothes originate from; “It’s All Greek To Me,” a lesson in Greek
culture; and the Chinese Culture Club shared information on clothing, food, and
language.
Conference participants also
traveled to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden for an afternoon of fun; held a
banquet, which highlighted the activities of county 4-H Teen Councils and
offered 4-H members the opportunity to practice leadership and public speaking;
and contributed to a community service project by gathering dental hygiene
products for the citizens of Western Samoa where a former Somerset County 4-H
member is serving in the Peace Corps.
The Camden County 4-H delegation
served in the hospitality role at the conference by providing healthy snacks
and drinks each night, keeping in line with 4-H’s “Get Moving, Get Healthy”
initiative; creating presenter gift bags for each speaker; and providing each participant
with a gift bag, which contained donations from Campbell’s Soup, such as a
calendar, soup mug, and Campbell’s Soup Kids figurines.
