“All Around the World With 4-H” theme at South Jersey Teen Conference Feb. 29-Mar. 2

Camden County 4-H Member Elected to Serve on the New Jersey State 4-H Association

CLEMENTON, NJ - Eleven county 4-H members attended the 2008 South Jersey 4-H Teen Conference on Feb. 29-Mar. 2 at the Holiday Inn in Swedesboro.  They joined 155 4-Hers from 10 South Jersey counties at the conference and included Shannon Hennegan, Steve Starkovski, Ian Eddy, Rachel Middleberg, Jessica Middleberg, Shawna Stewart, Kaitlin Caglianone, Ali Caglianone, Will Wymer, Alison Campbell, and Fallon Duffy.

This year’s theme, “All Around the World With 4-H,” opened on Friday, Feb. 29 with “The Global Simulation Workshop,” which is described as “an innovative three-hour program that builds valuable leadership and teamwork skills. The simulation lets students become world leaders responsible for running the world for 30 years. It gives students the ‘big picture’ view of the world and takes into account history, economics, geography, political science, ethics, social studies, technology and culture. Each team faced a unique set of challenges involving all of these factors and then had to determine which problems to address and how to develop sustainable solutions to these problems.

A global theme was maintained throughout the conference with other workshops showcasing various cultures through dance, music and customs, including rhythm of the Caribbean; Ukrainian eggs; international clothes search to learn about where our clothes originate from; “It’s All Greek To Me,” a lesson in Greek culture; and the Chinese Culture Club shared information on clothing, food, and language.

Conference participants also traveled to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden for an afternoon of fun; held a banquet, which highlighted the activities of county 4-H Teen Councils and offered 4-H members the opportunity to practice leadership and public speaking; and contributed to a community service project by gathering dental hygiene products for the citizens of Western Samoa where a former Somerset County 4-H member is serving in the Peace Corps.

The Camden County 4-H delegation served in the hospitality role at the conference by providing healthy snacks and drinks each night, keeping in line with 4-H’s “Get Moving, Get Healthy” initiative; creating presenter gift bags for each speaker; and providing each participant with a gift bag, which contained donations from Campbell’s Soup, such as a calendar, soup mug, and Campbell’s Soup Kids figurines.

Camden County 4-H Member Elected to Serve on the New Jersey State 4-H Association

Ian Eddy, a sophomore at Overbrook High School in Pine Hill, was elected to serve as one of the two South Jersey teen representatives to the State 4-H Association for 2008-09. He was one of six teens, representing different South Jersey counties, who vied for the nomination. It has been more than 20 years since a Camden County 4-H member has served in this capacity. “We are thrilled that Ian was elected to this position as a representative of Camden County. His interests and abilities in leadership will serve him well as he lives the 4-H Motto ‘To Make the Best Better’ and contributes to the betterment of the 4-H program on the local and state level,” commented Sharon Kinsey, Camden County 4-H Agent.

During the conference, he had to deliver a five minute speech about how he would contribute to the New Jersey State 4-H Association; took part in a one hour group interview and participated in the banquet. Each participant could vote for two representatives, each county had one vote, and then the interview scores played a part in the final tally.

Eddy remarked, “I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am to be serving as one of this year’s South Jersey Youth Representatives. I want to draw as many youth as possible to 4-H in New Jersey and show them everything 4-H has to offer. I look forward to working with everyone on the state level, as well as attending county fairs and talking with South Jersey’s 4-H Teen Councils about ways to improve 4-H.”

Eddy will serve for one year and his duties will involve attending New Jersey State 4-H Association meetings three times a year at Rutgers University in New Brunswick; gathering ideas and input from 4-H members on how to improve New Jersey 4-H; communicating information back to 4-H youth in South Jersey about 4-H opportunities, as well as assisting at next year’s South Jersey Teen Conference.

Eddy is the current President of A Horse of Course 4-H Club, a member of the new Camden County Sharp Shooters Shooting Sports Club, and a member of the county Teen Council.  His additional school activities include: serving as a member of his school’s stage crew; attending a Model United Nations Summit for two years; and serving as an assistant at New Jersey Boys State.

The South Jersey 4-H Teen Conference is an annual event which brings 4-H members in grades 8-13 together to practice leadership, citizenship and cooperation and is coordinated by the 4-H Youth Development Program, a part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension.  4-H offers educational programs to all youth, grades K-13, on an age-appropriate basis, without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.  For more information about the 4-H program in Camden County, call Sharon Kinsey, Camden County 4-H Agent, at 856-566-2908 or go to www.camdencounty4h.com .
