BLACK HISTORY EVENTS ABOUND ON CAMDEN COUNTY CALENDAR
For Immediate Release: January 31, 2008
Contacts: KEN SHUTTLEWORTH

A film about slavery in Camden and a production of “Porgy & Bess” are among highlights in the celebration of Black History Month in Camden County.

“The events calendar has something for everyone,” said Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, adding that details of the events – most of which are free – can be found on the home page of Camdencounty.com, or by calling the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission at 856-858-0040.

“The Cultural and Heritage Commission and the Camden County Special Events Division did a great job of sponsoring and coordinating the lineup. It’s one of the most comprehensive in my memory,” added Freeholder Riletta L. Cream, the governing body’s liaison to the commission.

The commission’s headquarters in the Hopkins House, 250 South Park Drive, in the Haddon Township portion of Cooper River Park is the site of one of the most ambitious events – “Sacred Images, Traditions and Rhythms,” a celebration of African art, history and culture. It continues through Feb. 29, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Feb. 2, the USS New Jersey in Camden will be the backdrop at 11 a.m. for a presentation documenting the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and their role in the nation’s military. Meanwhile on Feb. 2, the Dreamland Series exhibition and jazz concert featuring the Bootsie Barnes Quintet performs at 7 and 8:30 p.m. at Pomona Hall, the Camden County Historical Society’s headquarters on Park Boulevard and Euclid Ave., in Camden.

The Hopkins House will also host a lecture and presentation of the film “Unhushed” at 6 p.m. on Feb. 4 by Beverly Collins-Roberts, an artist/historian who produced the film about slavery in Camden during the 18th Century. A second presentation will take place on Feb. 28, at 7 p.m., at the Camden County College’s Camden campus. The college’s Camden campus will also host a praise dance performance called “Breaking the Barriers” on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
