Acting Camden County Prosecutor James P. Lynch reported that MacArthur
Mason, 18, pleaded guilty today to Simple Assault at a Youth Sports
Event, a fourth-degree offense. The defendant admitted he punched
an opponent after a high school basketball game on March 7, 2006,
in Voorhees.
Sentencing
before Superior Court Judge John T. McNeill III is scheduled for
July 7.
Mason
punched Deptford High School senior Rickie Crews in the nose after
a playoff game at Eastern Regional High School. The incident happened
while the players were lined up for the traditional handshake after
the game. Crews suffered a broken nose.
The
plea agreement, negotiated by Assistant Prosecutor Judy Berry, calls
for Mason to serve two years’ probation, pay restitution for
medical bills, have no contact with the victim and receive anger
management counseling.
“We
view Mr. Mason’s conduct as deplorable,” Lynch stated.
“What should have been a gesture of sportsmanship turned into
a violent, unprovoked assault. We firmly believe this is a fair
and just result, and we are satisfied that this is by far the most
likely result had the case gone to trial.”
