CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

February 2, 2006

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Don Tollefson, President of Winning Ways Education, announced today that Winning Ways has selected a Camden, N.J., teenager as one of three Delaware Valley youngsters it will send to Super Bowl XL in Detroit on Sunday, Feb. 5.

Billyjoe Marrero, 18, a student at the Creative Arts High School who served in the Prosecutor’s Office high school internship program last summer, will travel with a contingent sponsored by the non-profit youth service organization. The Winning Ways group is leaving for Detroit from Philadelphia International Airport on Friday, February 3 at 9:18 a.m. (Northwest Flight 1779, Gate E6). Interviews and photo opportunities will be available with all the participants (ideal time between 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.)

Corey K. Manderville, 28, of Camden, and Lawrence Willis, a.k.a. “Lawrence Williams,” a.k.a. “Reds,” 28, of Berlin, are charged in the killing of Dewey A. Marshall, 22. The victim was shot on Aug. 29 at the Tamarack Apartments on Ferry Avenue in Camden and died on Aug. 31 at Cooper University Hospital.

Billyjoe joins two young women from Philadelphia, Shaquwana Duncan and Odessa Tate, who were also selected by Winning Ways. Both young women are active in the Police Athletic League in Philadelphia. All three honorees were chosen for their inspirational stories of overcoming obstacles to succeed in school and in life. All three represent the positive characteristics the Police Athletic League, the Prosecutor’s Office and Winning Ways aim to instill in youngsters.

Billyjoe’s involvement with Winning Ways grew from his participation in the high school criminal justice internship program at the Prosecutor’s Office last summer. As a speaker at a Winning Ways ceremony honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 16, Billyjoe recited Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, impressing and inspiring the audience at the Cherry Hill Mall with his passionate delivery.

The high school internship program was designed and implemented by the Community Partnerships and Prosecutions Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office. The unit performs community education and outreach in such areas as bullying and school violence, domestic violence, neighborhood beautification, substance abuse prevention and property management training. The unit works with citizens as well as other law enforcement agencies, municipal government and civic organizations to improve quality of life in Camden County.

The trip to Detroit will include several behind the scenes tours and informational sessions. The men, women and bomb dogs from the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms task force will provide an exclusive look at some of the enormous security in place for the game. In addition, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will offer an even deeper look at the efforts in place to keep the entire city of Detroit safe during Super Bowl week. In total, 3 kids from Philadelphia and Camden will be making the trip courtesy of Tollefson and Winning Ways.
