Thirty-three people were arrested on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, during
an undercover drug operation
targeting would-be buyers in East Camden.
The reversal
operation, in which narcotics officers pose as drug dealers and
arrest people trying to buy
drugs, was conducted by the Joint Camden Task Force of the Philadelphia-Camden
High Intensity Drug
Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force. It took place at 25th and High
streets.
Of
the 33 people arrested, 11 are Camden residents. The other 22, or
67 percent, are from outside the
city, mostly from suburban South Jersey communities. That figure
is consistent with past reversal
operations. Historically, more than 60 percent of those arrested
attempting to buy drugs in the city are
from outside Camden.
Those
arrested were charged with Attempt to Obtain a Controlled Dangerous
Substance, a third-degree offense carrying a maximum five-year prison
term. They were issued summonses for future court appearances.
Reversal operations
like the one conducted Thursday aim to reduce demand for illegal
drug. Narcotics
trafficking fuels much of Camden’s crime.
All
persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless
and unil proven guilty in a
court of law.
