VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

August 8, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported today that a 16-year-old male was shot and killed last night, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, in Camden, N.J.

At approximately 8:08 p.m. last night, Camden police on duty at a community event were notified that someone had been shot in the area of 7th Street and Chelton Avenue near Staley Park. Upon arrival, police found Marheen Payton, M/16, who had been shot multiple times in the upper body. Emergency medical personnel were dispatched and transported the victim to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:34 p.m.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a group of people sitting on a bench heard gunfire, turned around and observed the victim fighting with another person in a vehicle. They then heard additional gunshots and saw Payton stagger away from the vehicle and collapse onto the sidewalk.

The investigation continues. No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is urged to call Investigator Matt Woshnak at the Camden County Prosecutor's Office at (856) 225-8400 or Camden Police Detective Frank Ruiz at (856) 757-7420.
