Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi, Camden Police Chief
Edwin J. Figueroa and U.S. Marshal for New Jersey James Plousis
reported today that a 26-year-old Camden man is being held in lieu
of bail after being arrested on Tuesday, July 19, 2005, on a charge
of Felony Murder stemming from the fatal shooting and robbery of
Salvador Martinez, 20, on May 22, 2005, in Camden, N.J.
Ziair T. McDaniels, a.k.a. Shalean Alford, of the 400 block of Morse
Street in Camden, is being held in the Camden County Correctional
Facility in lieu of $500,000 bail, cash only, set during an arraignment
on Wednesday, July 20, before Presiding Criminal Court Judge Linda
G. Baxter.
Members of the U.S. Marshal's New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive
Task Force, working with units from the New Jersey State Police,
arrested McDaniels at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday at the
Crestbury Apartments on South 8th Street in Camden. Based on information
task force detectives developed over the past several days, officers
conducted surveillance at Crestbury and apprehended McDaniels as
he exited an apartment building to get into a vehicle.
The fugitive task force includes detectives from the U.S. Marshal's
Service, Camden County Prosecutor's Office, Camden Police, New Jersey
State Police and the N.J. Department of Corrections.
On Sunday, May 22, 2005, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Camden Police
responded to a call for a man shot in the area of Rosedale and Merriel
avenues in the East Camden section of the city. Upon arrival, officers
found Martinez lying in the 3100 block of Merriel Avenue, suffering
from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency medical personnel
transported the victim to Cooper University Medical Center, where
he died a short time later.
Investigation indicates the two defendants approached the victim.
It is alleged that one pulled a handgun and shot Martinez, who fell
to the ground, at which time the other rifled through the victim's
pockets. Both defendants then allegedly ran from the scene.
All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent
unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
