Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden Police Chief
Edwin J. Figueroa reported today that Tiray Jones, M/21, of the
500 block of Royden Street in Camden, was charged on July 18, 2005
with Murder in connection with a shooting near the intersection
of 5th and Royden Streets in Camden on Oct. 19, 2004.
Jones is currently being held in Philadelphia at the Curran-Fromhold
Correctional Facility on unrelated charges. He will be returned
to Camden County at an undetermined future date at which time he
will be arraigned on the Murder charge.
At approximately 2:50 p.m. on the day of the shooting, Sheriff's
officers on duty heard and responded to a shooting in the area of
5th and Royden Streets. Upon arrival, they found Idris Gillis, M/26,
of Camden, lying on the sidewalk. He had a wound to the chest and
was pronounced dead a short time later at Cooper University Hospital.
Investigation indicates that Jones allegedly stole jewelry from
Gillis' girlfriend. Gillis attempted to retrieve the stolen jewelry
from Jones, investigation indicates. It is alleged that Jones then
fatally shot Gillis and fled.
All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent
unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
