CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

June 20, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi, Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa and Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson announced today that a 22-year-old Camden man is being held in Philadelphia on charges that include the Murder of a West Deptford man last month in Camden, N.J.

Dawayne Lindsey, who had addresses on Pierce Avenue and South 8th Street in Camden, is accused of shooting Ronald Akins, 38, to death on Monday, May 2.

Philadelphia Police arrested Lindsey on drug charges on June 11 in the 4900 block of Valley Street. Lindsey provided officers a fictitious name. Philadelphia Police determined his true identity through fingerprints and notified authorities in Camden County. He had been on Camden County's Most Wanted Fugitives list.

At 3:10 p.m. on May 2, Camden Police responded to a report of a man shot at 8th Street and Morgan Boulevard in the South Camden section of the city. Officers arriving at the scene learned that the victim had been transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden by a civilian in the civilian's vehicle. Akins had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and died a short time later at Cooper.

Investigation indicates that Lindsey approached Akins while the victim was selling footwear from his van, which was parked in the area of a shopping plaza at 8th & Morgan. It is alleged that Lindsey exchanged words with Akin over an earlier dispute, then shot Akins from close range.

Lindsey is being held in Philadelphia pending extradition. He will be arraigned in Superior Court upon his arrival in Camden, which has not yet been scheduled.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
