CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

June 2, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported that a Grand Jury today indicted Dr. Joseph P. Coladonato, M/62, for two counts of Attempted Murder and related offenses, alleging that the defendant purposely tried to kill his wife and her brother on Aug. 6, 2004, in Cherry Hill, N.J.

The indictment alleges that Coladonato, a neurosurgeon, fired a handgun at his wife, Eileen, and his wife's brother, David Barker, outside the Coladonatos' Charleston Road home last August. Eileen Coladonato suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and survived. She has since been released from the hospital. Barker was not struck.

After the shooting, Joseph Coladonato allegedly entered the home and refused to surrender to Cherry Hill Police for four hours.

In addition to Attempted Murder and Aggravated Assault, he is charged in connection with the Aug. 6 incident with Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Obstructing Administration of Law for allegedly holding police at bay and Endangering the Welfare of a Child for allegedly shooting at his wife and David Barker while his daughter, who was 15 at the time, was nearby.

The indictment also charges Joseph Coladonato with:

  • Terroristic Threats, alleging that he threatened to kill his wife on Aug. 3, 2004;
  • Aggravated Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, alleging that he choked his wife on July 13, 2004, in view of their daughter;
  • Criminal Contempt, alleging that he violated a court order by attempting to purchase a handgun on Aug. 23, 2005, in Delaware.

No court dates have been scheduled at this time. An initial post-indictment appearance is expected to be scheduled in the coming weeks.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
