CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
May 10, 2005
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported today that a
16-year-old male from Camden admitted in court that he punched a homeless
man who fell, struck his head on the ground and died on March 8, 2005,
in Camden, N.J.
The juvenile admitted on Monday, May 9, 2005, to Manslaughter in the
death of Eleazer Espinosa Pineda, a.k.a. Juan Delgado, 32.
The juvenile told Superior Court Judge Angelo DiCamillo, of the Family
Division in Camden, that he punched Pineda on March 6, 2005, after
they argued at 6th and Chestnut Streets in Camden. Pineda died two
days later at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
DiCamillo sentenced the juvenile to four years in a juvenile facility
- three years on the second-degree Manslaughter charge and one consecutive
year for an unrelated drug conspiracy charge.
At approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, Camden Police units were
dispatched to the area of 6th and Chestnut for a report of an assault.
While en route to the location, units were notified that emergency
medical technicians had transported the victim to Cooper University
Hospital.
Initial accounts were that several suspects punched and kicked the
victim, but further investigation indicated that the juvenile struck
the victim a single blow while they were standing in front of a store
in the area of 6th and Chestnut. At the time he punched the victim,
the juvenile was wearing boxing gloves, which he had borrowed from
a friend for recreational purposes just minutes before he encountered
Pineda.
