CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

May 5, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported that a Grand Jury indicted a Camden man this week for Attempted Murder and related offenses against three alleged victims, including a 3-month-old child, during an incident in August 2004 in Stratford, N.J.

Oshain U. Lambert, 30, of Atlantic Avenue in Camden, was arrested on Aug. 17, 2004, on Chestnut Avenue in Laurel Springs after a brief foot chase that started at the Woodmere Apartments in Stratford, where the alleged offenses occurred.

At approximately 11:10 p.m. on Aug. 17, 2004, Stratford Police responded to the apartment complex for a report of a man armed with a knife. Officers arrived as Lambert was allegedly fleeing the scene and gave chase. Other officers entered the building and found an 18-year-old woman in her apartment, suffering more than a half dozen stab wounds and bleeding heavily. Also inside the apartment building, officers located a male who lived in a neighboring unit who had been stabbed in the neck. Both victims were transported to area hospitals, where they were admitted in critical condition. Doctors were able to stabilize both victims.

It is alleged that Lambert attacked the 18-year-old woman, his estranged girlfriend, in the hallway outside her apartment while she was holding their 3-month-old daughter. The attack allegedly caused the baby to be thrown to the floor as the woman fell. Lambert then allegedly stabbed the woman repeatedly as her grandmother, who also lived in the apartment, picked up the baby, who was not harmed.

It is further alleged that Lambert stabbed the male neighbor in the neck as he attempted to restrain the defendant from stabbing the woman. Lambert then allegedly stabbed the woman again inside her apartment and threatened the woman's grandmother when she attempted to intervene.

It is further alleged that Lambert stalked his ex-girlfriend over the preceding months by threatening her and her family in letters and in person. The indictment charges Lambert with three counts of Attempted Murder against his ex-girlfriend, the neighbor who intervened and the baby. It also charges Lambert with Stalking, Criminal Restraint, Terroristic Threats, Burglary, Aggravated Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Resisting Arrest.

An initial court appearance will be scheduled in the coming weeks. Lambert remains incarcerated at the Camden County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Sarubbi commended the Stratford Police Department for its exemplary response to the emergency call and thorough initial investigation. He also credited the Laurel Springs and Somerdale Police Departments for their assistance in chasing and capturing the suspect. And he praised the Domestic Violence Unit of the Prosecutor's Office for the comprehensive follow-up investigation and Grand Jury presentation.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
