CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

May 3, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported that homicide detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a West Deptford man on Monday, May 2, 2005, in Camden, N.J.

Camden Police responded at 3:10 p.m. Monday to a report of a man shot at 8th Street and Morgan Boulevard in the South Camden section of the city. Officers arriving at the scene learned that the victim, Ronald Akins, 38, had been transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden by a friend in the friend's vehicle. Atkins had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and died a short time later at Cooper.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Akins, a footwear vendor, was selling items from his van, which was parked in the area of a shopping plaza at 8th & Morgan. He apparently became involved in a dispute with a suspect, who shot him from close range, investigation indicates.

Anyone with information is asked to call Senior Investigator Kevin Kellejan of the Camden County Prosecutor's Office at (856) 225-8400 or Camden Police Detective Orlando Perez at (856) 757-7420.
