CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
April 8, 2005
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported that a Riverfront
State Prison Corrections Officer pleaded guilty today to Official
Misconduct, admitting that he smuggled a cell phone to an inmate in
exchange for a $300 payment.
Luis Mangual, M/39, of Merchantville Avenue in Pennsauken, faces up
to four years in New Jersey State Prison when he is sentenced on June
3, 2005, before Superior Court Judge David G. Eynon.
Mangual was an officer at Riverfront for 15 years. As part of the
plea agreement negotiated by Assistant Prosecutor Christine Myers,
the defendant forfeits his position and any future public employment.
The investigation began when another corrections officer caught the
inmate with the pre-paid phone. Investigation indicates Mangual brought
the phone to the inmate on or about Dec. 1, 2004. An elderly relative
of the inmate's facilitated the exchange, but was unaware of the criminal
implications, investigation indicates. The inmate, whose name is being
withheld to protect the relative's identity, was penalized with internal
disciplinary action within Riverfront.
Mangual was suspended from his job the day he was charged on Feb.
18, 2005.
Sarubbi thanked the Special Investigations Division at Riverfront
for their assistance in the investigation.
