CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

March 15, 2005

U.S. Marshal for New Jersey James Plousis, Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi, New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes and Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported that the U.S. Marshal's New Jersey/New York Regional Fugitive Task Force today arrested a fugitive wanted for Conspiracy to Commit Murder in Camden, N.J.

The defendant, Alejandro Irizarry, a.k.a. Alex Santana, was on the Top 50 Fugitives list of the most violent and dangerous fugitives from Camden. The investigation by task force detectives from the Marshal's Service, Prosecutor's Office, State Police and City Police, as well as the N.J. Department of Corrections, under the direction of Commissioner Devon Brown, led to Irizarry's arrest today without incident at approximately 6 a.m. at a home in the 200 block of North 36th Street in Camden. He faces up to 10 years imprisonment on the charge if convicted.

The charge stems from Feb.16, 2005, when Camden Police responded at 10:48 a.m. to 34th & Federal streets for a report of a man shot. Officers arrived to find a 19-year-old Camden man who had been shot multiple times. The victim was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where he was stabilized. A criminal complaint alleges that Irizarry conspired with an unidentified man who shot the victim, apparently during a botched robbery attempt.

The warrant resulted from an investigation by the Camden Shoot Team, composed of detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, Camden Police Department and State Police who focus on Aggravated Assaults with a firearm. The investigation is continuing and an additional arrest is possible.

Irizarry was being held at the Camden County Correctional Facility pending the setting of bail.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
