MEDIA   INFORMATION

March 8, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported today that a 32-year-old homeless man was pronounced dead early this morning after an assault on Sunday, March 6, 2005, at 6th and Chestnut Streets in Camden.

The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Camden Police units were dispatched at approximately 4 p.m. yesterday to the area of 6th and Chestnut for a report of an assault. While en route to the location, units were notified that EMS had taken the victim to Cooper University Hospital.

Investigation indicates that the victim and a friend were at a store in the area of 6th and Chestnut. Upon leaving the store, both were approached by a group of four to five male suspects, who appeared to be juveniles, who punched the victim, knocked him to the ground and rendered him unconscious. The friend attempted to assist, but was assaulted and robbed.

The victim remained in critical condition at Cooper until he was pronounced dead at 3:59 a.m. today.

There are no arrests at this time and the investigation continues.

Anyone with information is urged to call Senior Investigator Diane Wilson at the Camden County Prosecutor's Office at (856) 225-8400 or Camden Police Detectives at (856) 757-7420. All information will be kept confidential.
