CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

March 2, 2005

U.S. Marshal for New Jersey James Plousis, Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported that a multi-agency fugitive task force arrested a Camden man in New York today on a warrant alleging that he stabbed another man to death with a sword in October in Camden, N.J.

Fernando Espinal, M/47, is charged with the Murder of William Jiminez, M/25. It is alleged that Espinal stabbed Jimenez with a samurai-type sword on Oct. 5, 2004. The victim died 17 days later.

Members of the U.S. Marshal's New Jersey/New York Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Espinal, a Dominican national, at approximately 6:30 a.m. today in an apartment where he had been living in the 900 block of Anderson Street in the Bronx. He was taken into custody without incident and is being held in New York pending extradition to Camden County. The task force is made up of detectives from the Marshal's Service, Prosecutor's Office, State Police and Camden Police, as well as the N.J. Department of Corrections.

Investigation indicates that a relative of Espinal's got into a traffic dispute with Jimenez on Oct. 5 in the 1000 block of South 4th Street, and the confrontation escalated into a physical fight. It is alleged that Espinal went to a nearby residence, got a samurai-type sword and stabbed Jimenez in the left side. Jimenez suffered massive internal injuries and was rushed to Cooper University Hospital in Camden. He remained in critical condition until he died on Oct. 22.

"This important arrest is a result of great police work by the Marshal's task force," Sarubbi stated.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
