Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Cherry Hill Police
Chief Brian Malloy reported today that a developmentally disabled
man is in extremely critical condition with head injuries suffered
in a fall after he was pushed by a fellow patient at a treatment and
therapy facility in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Michael Collins, 44, is in Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
Cherry Hill Police responded to the Willowglen Academy on King Avenue
on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at approximately 2:15 p.m. to find the
victim unresponsive.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Collins was at the facility
for his normal course of therapy when another patient approached Collins
and pushed him, causing him to fall and strike his head on the floor.
There was no verbal or physical contact between the two prior to the
incident, investigation indicates.
The 38-year-old patient who pushed Collins is mentally retarded and
autistic. He has not been charged at this time. The investigation
is continuing.
Both men are residents of a group home on Delwood Road in Cherry Hill
that is affiliated with the Willowglen Academy, which is a subsidiary
of Phoenix Care Systems of Milwaukee, Wis. The patient who pushed
Collins remains in the custody of Willowglen.
