CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
February 18, 2005
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi, Winslow Police Chief
Anthony Bello, state Department of Human Services Police Chief Raymond
Brennan and State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes reported
today that a 25-year-old woman remains jailed after being arrested
this week, accused of injecting heroin into a man who died from an
adverse reaction to drugs.
Barbara Sandra Cox, of Hanover Street in Pemberton, N.J., is charged
under a law that holds a person who injects heroin into another person
liable for a death resulting from an adverse reaction to the drug.
Strict Liability for Drug-Induced Death is a first-degree charge carrying
a maximum 20-year prison sentence upon conviction. Cox was arrested
on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at her home.
It is alleged that on April 11, 2004, Cox injected heroin into Bruce
E. Dziuk, 46, at his residence, an apartment at the Veterans' Haven
transitional housing facility on the grounds of Ancora State Hospital
in Winslow, N.J. Camden County Medical Examiner Dr. Paul J. Hoyer
ruled that Dziuk died from an adverse reaction to heroin and oxycodone.
Investigation indicates that Dziuk was in Camden the night of April
10, 2004, and met Cox, whom he did not know, in the city. They traveled
back to his apartment at Veterans Haven, investigation indicates.
It is alleged that Cox prepared heroin supplied by Dziuk, filled a
syringe with it and injected it into Dziuk's arm, at which time Dziuk
immediately lost consciousness. Cox allegedly left without seeking
medical assistance. A Veterans Haven employee discovered Dziuk's body
the following day at approximately 1 p.m. and notified Department
of Human Services Police.
Cox is being held in Burlington County's detention center for women
in Pemberton on unrelated theft and trespassing charges, awaiting
transfer to Camden County.
All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless
and until proven guilty in a court of law.
