CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
February 7, 2005
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported today that a
37-year-old inmate of the Camden County Correctional Facility died
on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at Cooper University Hospital, approximately
two days after hanging himself from a bunk bed in a jail cell.
Rodney W. Bacchues, of Camden, died at 11:35 a.m. on Sunday at Cooper.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Bacchues was transported
to the hospital on Friday, Feb. 4, after a corrections officer discovered
him at 7:11 a.m. in a psychiatric ward cell where he was the lone
occupant. He had tied shoelaces to the upper part of a bunk bed and
around his neck and then slumped to put pressure on his throat. Bacchues
was unresponsive and never regained consciousness before he died.
Assistant Camden County Medical Examiner Ian Hood performed an autopsy
on Sunday and ruled the death a suicide by hanging.
Bacchues faced up to 30 years in prison after a jury convicted him
on Thursday, Feb. 3, of Aggravated Assault and Endangering the Welfare
of his son, who was 3 months old at the time of the offenses in February
2003. Testimony indicated that the baby had a wad of gauze stuffed
down his throat that restricted his breathing. The baby also suffered
multiple skull and rib fractures. The boy, now 2 years old, is living
out of state with family members and continues to suffer from developmental
disabilities as a result of the injuries.
