CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

January 28, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported today that a 16-year-old male faces adult charges in the fatal stabbing of a convenience store clerk during an alleged robbery in Somerdale, N.J., in November 2004.

Superior Court Judge Angelo DiCamillo today granted the state's motion seeking to have the juvenile waived to adult court. Later in the day, Superior Court Judge Irvin Snyder set bail at $500,000 cash for the defendant, Gregory Williams, of Washington Avenue in Blackwood. He will continue to be held at the Camden County Youth Detention Center in Blackwood in lieu of bail.

The victim, Suraj Gulabani, 21, of Somerdale, was working at the Country Farm Market store, which is owned by his family, in the 400 block of Warwick Road. It is alleged that Williams entered the store shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 9 and attempted a robbery. The juvenile and victim struggled, and it is alleged that the juvenile then stabbed Gulabani multiple times with a kitchen knife. The victim was rushed to Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Stratford, where he died shortly after 10 a.m.

Investigation indicates that the juvenile fled the store on foot after the stabbing. A motorist observed the juvenile fleeing and reported to authorities that he had seen the suspect proceed onto Sunset Drive and run out of sight into a wooded area. A short time later, Somerdale Police received a call from a resident of a home in the 700 block of Sunset Drive reporting a break-in in progress. Police responded, surrounded the home and apprehended the juvenile a short time later. Further investigation revealed that relatives of the juvenile live in the home and that the juvenile broke through a glass pane in the home's back door while gaining entry.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
