CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
January 28, 2005
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden Police Chief
Edwin J. Figueroa announced today that a $1,000 reward has been posted
for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person
or persons responsible for a shooting that left a 2-year-old Camden
girl critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head.
Yahnajeah Kirkland, who turned 3 in December, has been hospitalized
ever since the shooting on Oct. 28, 2004, in the area of 8th Street
and Ferry Avenue in the Centerville section of Camden. She suffered
severe brain injuries.
Camden Police responded to a report of shots fired at 9:34 p.m. that
night. Arriving officers learned that a passenger in a passing vehicle
had been wounded and rushed to the hospital.
Investigation indicates that the victim was in the driver's side rear
seat of a Ford Escape SUV that that had just turned off Ferry Avenue
and was traveling north on South 8th Street. Shots rang out in the
area, and within seconds the victim's mother, who was a front seat
passenger, alerted the driver that her child had been shot. The driver,
also a female, drove directly to Virtua-West Jersey Hospital. From
there, the child was transported by ambulance to Cooper Trauma Center
and remained there for several weeks before being transferred to a
rehabilitation facility.
Investigation indicates a bullet pierced the driver's side rear door
and struck the girl in the head. Neither the little girl nor the vehicle
is believed to be an intended target.
"We believe that there are people in the community who can help us
solve this horrible crime," Sarubbi said. "On behalf of Yahnajeah
Kirkland's family and all who are outraged by this tragedy, we call
on anyone with information to do the right thing."
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call the Camden
County Prosecutor's Office at (856) 225-8400 or Camden Police Detectives
at (856) 757-7420.
