MEDIA INFORMATION
January 27, 2005
U.S. Marshal for New Jersey James Plousis, Camden County Prosecutor
Vincent P. Sarubbi, New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Rick
Fuentes and Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported today that
the U.S. Marshal's New Jersey/New York Regional Task Force
on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, arrested another fugitive who had been
on the Top 50 Camden Fugitives list.
It was the second day in a row that the task force apprehended a defendant
from the list of the most violent and dangerous fugitives from Camden,
N.J., under a new, intensified effort spurred by additional resources
provided by the U.S. Marshal's Service.
Jerome Bennett, 27, whose last known address was on Carl Miller Boulevard
in Camden, was arrested without incident on Wednesday at a residence
in the 300 block of Chambers Street in Trenton. Task force detectives
from the Marshal's Service, Prosecutor's Office, State Police and
City Police, as well as the N.J. Department of Corrections, under
the direction of Commissioner Devon Brown, tracked Bennett to the
location and arrested him with the assistance of Trenton Police.
Bennett is charged with Unlawful Possession of an Assault Weapon (3rd
degree), Certain Persons Not to Carry Weapons (2nd), Criminal Restraint
(3rd), Terroristic Threats (3rd) Aggravated Assault with a Firearm
(4th), and Possession with the Intent to Distribute Cocaine (3rd).
The maximum sentence for the second-degree charge is 10 years imprisonment,
five years for the third-degree charges and 18 months for the 4th
degree.
It is alleged that on March 28, 2004, in Camden, Bennett grabbed his
ex-girlfriend by the hair, pushed her into a residence and would not
let her leave. It is further alleged the defendant pointed a Tec-22
assault firearm at the woman and threatened to shoot and kill her,
then fled. In addition, Bennett allegedly possessed cocaine with the
intent to sell it.
Domestic violence detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office
and Camden Police Department conducted the initial investigation.
Bennett was being held at the Camden County Correctional Facility
in lieu of $50,000 bail, cash or bond, as well as $5,500 cash bail
on municipal warrants for traffic and other violations.
The arrest resulted from leads developed through law enforcement investigation
and is not expected to result in a $1,000 reward to a citizen. The
arrest on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, of fugitive Michael Moore is expected
to result in a $1,000 reward payment.
All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless
and until proven guilty in a court of law.
