CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

January 25, 2005

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden Police Chief Edwin J. Figueroa reported that the principal of Pyne Poynt Middle School in Camden, N.J., was arrested today on charges of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Official Misconduct, accused of offering money to a male student to undress in his presence.

Daniel L. Edwards, 55, was arrested shortly after 4 p.m. today at his home in Pennsauken. He was being held on $35,000 bail, cash or bond. Each of the two charges carries a maximum 10-year term in New Jersey State Prison upon conviction.

Edwards has been principal for approximately four years at the school for grades 6 to 8, located in North Camden.

A joint investigation by Camden Police and the Camden County Prosecutor's Office began when the 14-year-old victim came to the Camden Police Administration Building on Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, and reported that Edwards had approached him three times this month and asked him to remove various articles of clothing including his shirt, shoes, pants and "drawers." Investigation indicates that during the most recent exchange, which allegedly occurred on Friday, Jan. 21 in the principal's office, the victim had a micro-cassette recorder hidden in his shirt pocket. The tape recording corroborates the victim's account that Edwards offered the boy money to pull down his pants and his "drawers." The victim never complied with the defendant's requests.

The school was closed on Monday due to snow. Edwards took a personal leave day today, believed to be unrelated to the investigation, and was not at the school.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
