CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
January 8, 2005
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported that the death
of a Camden County Correctional Facility inmate today has been ruled
a suicide.
Preliminary investigation indicates the following:
At approximately 10:07 a.m. today, a corrections officer working in
the area for inmates with psychiatric issues was doing a routine check
of a cell when inmates inside alerted him that a cell mate was unresponsive.
The officer investigated and found that the decedent had tied his
jail jumpsuit to a bunk bed, tied the other end around his neck and
slumped beside the bed to put tension on his neck. He was dead at
the scene.
The decedent was a 22-year-old male with a last known address in Waterford.
He was being held on a burglary charge. He had been admitted to the
jail on Jan. 6, 2005, apparently after being picked up on a bench
warrant after missing a court date.
Under protocol for unattended deaths in the county, the Prosecutor’s
Office responded to the jail and continues to investigate. There was
no sign of a struggle inside the cell. Three other inmates were in
the cell at the time, but all three were either asleep or unaware
of the decedent’s actions until one later noticed that he was not
moving.
Assistant Camden County Medical Examiner Ian Hood ruled the death
as a suicide by hanging.
