MEDIA   INFORMATION

January 14, 2004

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi announced that a Grand Jury today indicted former Roman Catholic priest James F. Hopkins, M/60, on charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault, Sexual Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Hopkins, who lives in Florida, is accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old male on multiple occasions between May 1995 and October 1995 at the victim's home in Pennsauken, N.J., and in a convenience store parking lot, also in Pennsauken. Hopkins was assigned to St. Aloysius Church in Oaklyn, N.J., at the time of the alleged offenses.

Members of the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, Pennsauken Police Department and Martin County (Fla.) Sheriff's Department arrested Hopkins at his home in Stuart, Fla., on April 14, 2003. The defendant waived extradition on April 17 and arrived at the Camden County Correctional Facility on May 5. He was released on May 21 after posting $75,000 bail.

If convicted, the defendant faces up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison for Aggravated Sexual Assault, up to 10 years for Sexual Assault and up to five years for Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

No court dates have been scheduled at this time.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
