CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

January 13, 2004

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Lindenwold Police Chief Francis A. McHenry announced tonight that authorities are investigating an attempted luring this afternoon in Lindenwold, N.J.

An 11-year-old girl got off her bus after school and went to a friend's home briefly. She then left the friend's house to go home. As she was walking in the 100 block of South Carlton in Lindenwold at approximately 3:30 p.m., a white, four-door vehicle made a U-turn and approached her. The victim reports that the suspect got out of the car, asked her to help him find his puppy and offered her candy. She declined and walked around the suspect, who then grabbed her by the neck. The victim punched at the suspect, managed to break free and ran the short distance back to her friend's home. The suspect chased the girl briefly, then fled in his vehicle.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set black male, approximately 30 to 40 years old, with short black hair, curly on top and shaved on the sides. He is described as having hazel eyes, a goatee, diamond earring in his left ear with a crooked tooth and a ring on his right hand. He was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and baggy blue jeans. His vehicle is described as a white four-door sedan with a dent on the passenger side front door and a small Winnie the Pooh sticker on the passenger side rear window.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that the same suspect was responsible for Attempted Lurings on Dec. 8 and Dec. 10 in Pine Hill, N.J.

Lindenwold Police are increasing patrols around schools in response to the incident. Sarubbi noted that this is the latest in a series of such reported incidents in the southern end off Camden County since the fall. While the descriptions in each case differ by varying degrees, law enforcement officers are investigating whether the same suspect is responsible for two or more of the disturbing incidents.

"Parents and children need to be alert and take proper precautions," Sarubbi said.

Anyone with information should call Lindenwold Police at (856) 784-2630.
