Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Barrington Police
Chief George Preen announced today, following an autopsy on a baby
boy found in Barrington on Sunday, March 16, 2003, that no determination
has yet been made as to the cause and manner of death.
Dr. Ian Hood, Camden County Deputy Medical Examiner, has classified
the matter as "pending further investigation." Dr. Hood, who performed
the autopsy, has ordered laboratory tests on lung tissue from the
infant in an effort to determine whether the baby was alive when
he was born. The results are likely to be available within two weeks,
Sarubbi and Preen said. It is hoped that the laboratory report will
provide Dr. Hood with additional medical details to enable him to
make a definitive ruling on the case.
No charges have been filed.
The investigation, which is being conducted by the Homicide Unit
of the Camden County Prosecutor's Office in cooperation with the
Barrington Police Department, is continuing.
At approximately 7 a.m. Sunday, a 14-year-old Barrington girl was
taken to a local hospital with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding.
Medical personnel determined that the girl had recently given birth.
That led investigators to search in the area of the girl's home.
At approximately 4 p.m. Sunday, officers discovered a black plastic
bag in the back yard of a home neighboring the girl's. Inside the
bag was the body of an infant boy who appeared to have reached full-term
or near full-term gestation.
No further information about the investigation is available at this
time.
