Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi, Gloucester City Police
Chief William Johnson Sr. and Gloucester City Fire Chief William
Glassman reported that an early morning house fire today claimed
the life of Emily Kotarski, F/20, at the home where she lived in
the 500 block of Middlesex Street in Gloucester City, N.J.
Kotarski was found in a second-floor bedroom near a window. Three
other residents were injured: Patricia Daisey, F/75, who was being
treated at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa.; Athena
Kotarski, F/2, being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia;
and Allison Kotarski, 8 months, who was treated at a local hospital.
Athena Kotarski is Emily's niece. Allison Kotarski is Emily's daughter.
The relationship of Daisey to the other victims was not immediately
available.
The fire, reported at 1:53 a.m. today, destroyed the inside of the
victims' home. A home next door sustained smoke and water damage.
The Camden County Fire Marshall's Office is continuing to investigate
the fire's cause and origin. Preliminary investigation indicates
the fire was accidental.
Sarubbi, Johnson and Glassman praised the efforts of the responding
policemen who rescued the three survivors off the home's roof and
of firefighters who battled icy conditions to control the fire as
quickly as possible and prevent further injuries and deaths.
