CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
January 21, 2003
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi announced that James D.
Gunning, M/32, pleaded guilty today to Aggravated Manslaughter, admitting
in court that he strangled a woman in Camden in December 1997.
Assistant Prosecutor James M. Conley will recommend a sentence of
17 years in New Jersey State Prison - including 14 years, five months
and 14 days without parole eligibility - when Superior Court Judge
Irvin J. Snyder sentences Gunning on March 7, 2003.
A Camden Police patrol officer discovered the partially clothed body
of the victim - Dawn McCary, F/24, of the 2000 block of Filmore Street
in Camden - at Viola and Ancona streets in Camden at approximately
10:45 p.m. on Dec. 23, 1997. An autopsy determined the cause of death
to be strangulation and the manner of death to be homicide.
Gunning, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., told the court he met McCary that
night and later "put a rope around her neck and strangled her." He
stated he did not intend to kill the victim and did not believe at
the time that she was dead.
