CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA   INFORMATION

January 16, 2003

Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Lt. Col. Frederick H. Madden, Acting Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, announced that former Camden Police Detective Miguel Torres, M/32, pleaded guilty today to three counts of Theft by Deception. Torres admitted in court that he submitted false and inflated vouchers to receive overtime pay from the City of Camden.

As part of a plea agreement negotiated by Assistant Prosecutor Joel Aronow, Torres consented to pay $9,000 restitution. The agreement also calls for Torres, who resigned from the Camden Police Department in 1999, to serve five years probation and a 364-day jail term to be served under house arrest. The case resulted from a joint investigation by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey State Police.

Torres, of Parkville Station Road in West Deptford, N.J., admitted committing the offenses between June 10, 1997, and Nov. 5, 1999, while he was assigned to the police department's Executive Protection Detail as a bodyguard to former Camden Mayor Milton Milan.
