Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi announced today that a
Camden County jury returned guilty verdicts on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003,
on all eight counts against Clarence Collins, M/22, including Attempted
Murder, Armed Robbery and Carjacking.
Collins faces up to 30 years, including 25 years and six months without
parole eligibility, when he is sentenced March 7, 2003, by Superior
Court Judge John T. McNeill III. Other counts include weapons offenses
and Aggravated Assault.
The state's case, presented by Assistant Prosecutor Philip H. Coyle,
included testimony from the victim, Bruce Matthews, M/21, of Camden.
After a three-day trial, the jury of seven women and five men deliberated
for approximately 3½ hours before reaching the verdicts. Trial testimony
indicated that on Oct. 12, 2001, Collins asked the victim for a ride
in the victim's vehicle. The victim drove Collins to Miller Street
near Ferry Avenue. They talked for a few minutes, and then the defendant
shot Matthews in the face and left with the victim's vehicle.
Collins, who lived in the Crestbury Apartments in Camden, has been
lodged in the Camden County Correctional Facility since being arrested
in mid-December 2001.
