Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported today that sentencing
is scheduled for March 7, 2003, for a Voorhees man who pleaded guilty
on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, to Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance
(cocaine) with Intent to Distribute the drug. In addition, the defendant,
James E. Petrei, 38, of the Heritage Grove Apartments on Echelon Road,
pleaded guilty to violating a statute that bars people convicted of
certain offenses from possessing a firearm. Among the items police
seized during the defendant's arrest arrest were a shotgun and shells,
which Petrei is barred from possessing because of a 1997 conviction
for possession of hollow point bullets.
Superior Court Judge Frank M. Lario Jr. is scheduled to sentence the
defendant in March, at which time Assistant Prosecutor William Staas
will recommend a New Jersey State Prison term of five years with no
parole eligibility for the gun possession charge and a concurrent
five years for the drug distribution charge.
On April 22, 2002, Petrei sold cocaine to an undercover officer in
Voorhees. Three days later, police executed a search warrant at the
defendant's apartment and arrested him. In addition to confiscating
the shotgun and shells, officers also seized cocaine, numerous knives,
a stun gun, num chucks and drug paraphernalia.
Petrei remains free on $85,000 bail pending sentencing.
