CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
January 8, 2003
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi reported today that sentencing
is scheduled for March 7, 2003, for three Gibbsboro, N.J., residents
who pleaded guilty to drug charges stemming from the discovery of
marijuana plants being grown on the site of the former Buzby Landfill
in Voorhees.
Christopher Coyne, 40, and Martin Mahon, 39, each pleaded guilty on
Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, to Operating a Drug Manufacturing Facility.
Coyne's wife, Kim Caruso-Coyne, 34, pleaded guilty to possession of
marijuana with intent to distribute the drug. All three lived in the
first block of Troth Avenue in Gibbsboro.
Assistant Prosecutor William Staas will recommend 10-year New Jersey
State Prison terms for Coyne and Mahon when they are sentenced by
Superior Court Judge Frank M. Lario Jr. Staas will recommend Caruso-Coyne
receive a probationary term and 30 days jail time that may be served
as house arrest or in an offender work program administered by Camden
County Sheriff Michael McLaughlin.
The illegal operation came to light on Sept. 28, 2001, when a state
game warden driving through the area observed an individual scale
a fence around the defunct landfill. The officer investigated and
discovered marijuana plants among the vegetation growing on the site.
He informed Voorhees Police, who posted a surveillance team and on
the night of Oct. 1, 2001, surprised the two male defendants as they
harvested marijuana. Officers found 23 marijuana plants growing there.
Officers then went to the Troth Avenue home and observed marijuana
plants growing in the back yard. They obtained a search warrant for
the home and confiscated 14 more marijuana plants. They also seized
approximately $5,000 in cash, scales and a shotgun.
All three are free on bail pending sentencing.
