CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
VINCENT P. SARUBBI, CAMDEN COUNTY PROSECUTOR
MEDIA INFORMATION
January 3, 2003
Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi and Camden City Police
Chief Robert Allenbach announced that Omar Saunders, M/23, was charged
today with Murder in connection with the shooting death on June 1,
2002, of Donnell Jakes, M/20.
Camden Police received a 9-1-1 call at approximately 3:32 a.m. reporting
shots fired in the area of 26th Street and Pierce Avenue. Responding
officers found the victim, who had lived in the 2900 block of Wasp
Road in Camden, lying on the sidewalk and unresponsive. An autopsy
by Dr. Ian Hood of the Camden County Medical Examiner's Office determined
the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds to the head and the
manner of death to be homicide.
The investigation determined that the victim and the defendant, who
had been longtime friends, argued at a Philadelphia nightclub, and
that the disagreement continued as they drove together back to Camden.
The shooting took place not far from the home of the defendant, who
lived in the 1100 block of North 26th Street.
Saunders was being held at the Cumberland County Jail on unrelated
aggravated assault and weapons charges stemming from an altercation
in Vineland, N.J. An arraignment in Camden for the Murder charge will
be scheduled at a later date.
All persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in
a court of law.
