Walt Whitman in the Civil War

In the midst of the American Civil War, a man stepped into the fray armed only with a loving heart and a deep well of compassion.  Walt Whitman spent three years visiting Washington’s hospitals caring for the thousands of badly wounded soldiers. His enormous contribution to the war came without ever firing a shot.

Although never in combat, Whitman witnessed firsthand the gruesome and bloody aftermath of  a battle.
