Breaking News: The Contemporary Middle East

Join The Center at Camden County College for their lecture series “Breaking News: The Contemporary Middle East” on Thursdays at 7 PM.

This week’s topic is “Morocco Post 2011: Between the Need for Change and the Fear of Instability” and will be led by Intissar Fakir from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Morocco may have escaped revolution in the 2011 upheaval that swept across the Middle East, but the protests left a profound mark on the country’s politics, the people’s aspirations and expectations, and the position of the king. This lecture will provide an overview of how a moderate Islamist party came to power and how the monarchy and political establishment sought to blunt influence. It will also explore the context of these political developments, including Morocco’s strategy for managing regional turmoil, internal political reform, security, and strategic engagement with international partners include the EU, US, and sub-Saharan Africa.
