Textbook Rentals Offered for First Time at Camden County College

Here’s the answer: Tuxedos, limousines, apartments, beach houses, other high-cost items typically used only briefly.

So what’s the question? What are items that can be rented?

Textbooks are another high-cost good typically used only briefly, and now Camden County College is making them an item that can be rented as well.

Starting this fall, students enrolled at CCC will be able to rent some of the textbooks required for their classes. Rentals will be available through Barnes & Noble at the CCC bookstores on the Blackwood Campus and at the William G. Rohrer Center in Cherry Hill and through Follett at the University District Bookstore that Camden County College operates on the Camden City Campus to serve students from CCC, Rutgers University – Camden and Rowan University at Camden. Nationwide, about 300 schools are offering rentals through Barnes & Noble and about 800 are through Follett.

It is estimated that most U.S. college and university students will spend upwards of $900 to $1,200 this year on books. Renting will save CCC students 50 percent off what they would pay to purchase a new textbook.

Rentals may be made in the bookstore or from the store Web site at camdencc.bncollege.com for Blackwood and Cherry Hill or www.bkstr.com/Home/10001-10454-1 for Camden. Returns will include drop-off and mail-in options and be facilitated with e-mail reminders.

“Camden County College is pleased to be able to offer a textbook-rental program, especially one that is so convenient and easy to use,” said President Raymond Yannuzzi. “Because renting will allow students to pay about half of what it would cost for them to purchase a new textbook, we expect this program will be of significant financial benefit to our students as is our used-textbook/buyback program.”

Since initiating its innovative plan for used-textbook purchases four years ago, CCC has significantly reduced book prices for students. And last year alone, the College’s bookstores paid more than $1.2 million in cash back to students for their used books.

For additional information regarding textbook rentals at Camden County College, students should visit one of the campus bookstores or one of the Web sites listed above.
