Camden County Program Gives Inmates Second Chance

The Camden County Correctional Facility has received the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) under New Jersey’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  The JAG provided the jail with $250,000.00 for two years to create a “Second Chance” ex-offender re-entry program for those incarcerated for substance abuse violations.  Inmates in the program meet weekly with mentors that recount their own battles with drugs and alcohol, and provide encouragement for those in recovery.  The correctional facility is also working to expand its vocational training programs in order to provide better opportunities to those re-entering the community.

“It is important for these programs to begin early in order for the greatest success,” said Freeholder Rod Greco, liaison to the Correctional Facility.  “This program can change lives, and insure that individuals don’t wind up back in jail for the same offenses time and time again.”
