Camden County College Students Named to All-State Academic Team

Two of the best and brightest members of Camden County College’s Class of 2010 have been recognized for their scholastic achievements and community involvement with selection to this year’s New Jersey All-State Academic Team. Julianne Janocha of Sicklerville and Lauren Serebransky of Washington Township were two of the 31 community college students from throughout the state to be selected to the team, which is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the Coca-Cola Foundation.

Phi Theta Kappa is the top honor society for students at two-year colleges, and All-State Academic Team members typically are members of PTK. This year’s team was honored during the 16th annual Phi Theta Kappa Day celebration, which was conducted by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges in Trenton and sponsored by PSE&G.

Each of New Jersey’s 19 community colleges may nominate up to two graduating students for the team each year. Honorees receive a state legislative resolution, an award certificate and an award medallion. They also qualify to be considered for hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships; certain national internship opportunities; and membership on the All-USA Academic Team.

Janocha, who is a PTK member, completed her associate’s degree in elementary/secondary education with a 3.45 grade-point average. While at CCC, she was an instructor for the Black People’s Unity Movement Day Care Center in Camden and the Catholic Christian Doctrine program at Our Lady of Peace Church in Williamstown. She is transferring to Rowan University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in elementary education/writing arts.

Serebransky, also a PTK member, was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society and completed the CCC Honors Program as well. She earned her associate’s degree in music with a 3.89 grade-point average. Serebransky was a site coordinator for the YZ Kids after-school program and is the junior and senior girl camp unit director, both for the at the YMCA of Gloucester County, and has been an advisor for the Re’ut Youth Group and the Teen Connection of the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization. She will transfer to Ramapo College of New Jersey to pursue a bachelor’s degree in history education.
