CAMDEN -- Three prominent southern New Jersey citizens will be honored by the Senator Walter Rand Institute (WRI) for Public Affairs
at Rutgers–Camden for their leadership contributions to the region during the annual “Celebration of South Jersey” event on
Friday, May 7.
The ninth annual Senator Walter and Leah Rand South Jerseyan of the Year Awards will be presented to Steve Cordasco, senior vice president of the Cordasco Group and RBC Wealth Management; Angela Estes, the retired executive director of Robin’s Nest; and the Honorable Jeffrey Nash, an attorney who also serves as a Camden County Freeholder and vice chair of the Delaware River Port Authority board.
In keeping with the legacy of the late Senator Walter Rand and his wife, Leah, the event will applaud regional growth, service, and identity while also spotlighting scholarships at Rutgers–Camden.
According to Richard Harris, a professor of political science at Rutgers–Camden and WRI director, “It’s important for South Jersey to think and act regionally if we hope to balance our competing desires for growth with the preservation of the quality of life that makes South Jersey such an attractive place to live.
Through research and public service the Senator Walter Rand Institute seeks to bring together citizens, policy makers and the resources of Rutgers–Camden to advance these goals.”
The WRI award honorees are selected on the basis of their efforts to promote regional approaches to growth and exemplary service in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.
Cordasco serves as senior vice president and financial consultant for RBC Wealth Management. He hosts “The Big Money Show” on WPHT-AM (1210) radio on Saturday and Sunday mornings. He has been a guest host on the Wall Street Journal Radio Network, the Larry Kudlow radio show, and Neil Cavuto’s “Your World” show on Fox News. In 2010, Cordasco was named among the “Top 1,000 Financial Advisors” in the Feb. 22 issue of Barron’s, a national financial newspaper published by Dow Jones & Company. The nominees are ranked based on several factors including quality of service; Cordasco was ranked eighth among the best advisors in Pennsylvania.
Cordasco, who was named Temple University’s 2009 Alumni of the Year, has been involved with many charitable organizations, including the Russell Byers Charter School, the Northern Home for Children, CORA Services, and the Philadelphia Athletic League. Along with RBC Wealth Management, Cordasco has been instrumental in supporting the Camden community through a concert series by Symphony in C and RBC Blue Water, a program that supports teaching youth about watersheds. A graduate of the Fox School of Business at Temple, Cordasco lives in Haddonfield.
For more than 29 years, Estes served as executive director of Robin’s Nest, Inc., a private, non-profit, children’s services agency serving more 7,400 children and families each year. She currently is an executive consultant with the organization. She is a team leader and peer reviewer for the Council on Accreditation of Services for Children and Families, and is a former executive board member and past president of the New Jersey Association of Children’s Residential Facilities. In recognition of her advocacy for vulnerable children, Estes has received many prestigious honors including the Spirit of United Way Award, the Gettysburg College Distinguished Alumni Award, the Helms Award from Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey, and the Gloucester County Woman of the Year Community Service Award. Estes is a graduate of Gettysburg College and holds a master’s degree in education from Temple University.
Nash is a senior partner with the respected Philadelphia law firm of Cozen O’Connor, where he specializes in civil litigation. Nash was first elected to public office in 1989 as a member of the Cherry Hill Council, where he served until 1993. In 1991, he was elected to the seven-member Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders, where he served initially as the Freeholder Liaison to Camden County’s Department of Health and Human Services. Under his direction, the county department began its acclaimed child immunization program and created the Youth Empowerment System facility, which serves as a safe haven for troubled children and abused runaways. In 1995, Nash was selected by his colleagues to serve as Camden County Freeholder Director, a position he held for 10 years. Under his leadership, Camden County received two bond-rating upgrades by Wall Street rating agencies. He oversaw the creation of the County Human Relations Commission, the Asian American Advisory Board, and the County Labor Management Committee, which won national recognition by the National Association of Counties. In 2002, New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevy appointed Nash as vice chair of the Delaware River Port Authority of Pennsylvania and New Jersey (DRPA). He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from George Washington University and is a graduate of the Hofstra University School of Law. He resides in Cherry Hill.
“Celebrating South Jersey” will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Rutgers–Camden Campus Center. Funds raised from the business-casual evening will support scholarships for Rutgers–Camden students in law, public policy, and social sciences.
