Gloucester City's Southport Area was once home to vibrant chemical and shipping industries, which provided several thousands of local jobs. However, with plant closures and relocations, this industrial district has sat vacant and abandoned for years. As part of federal and state brownfield cleanup programs, the City is beginning to reclaim this waterfront area for redevelopment as a thriving mixed-use neighborhood with commercial and retail uses to local residents and regional visitors. Marinas and other maritime recreational uses, restaurants and entertainment venues are planned for Southport. These uses and the Southport's traditional neighborhood planning and architectural design will further its sense of place. A future ferry may connect Southport to the old Philadelphia Navy Yard, where similar uses are planned.
